การใช้ความรู้เรื่องเครื่องหมายวรรคตอน
1. เครื่องหมาย comma (,)
บอกความเป็นประโยคเดียวกัน เช่น
There are many kinds of flowers in this florist’s, such as dahlias, zinnias, roses and orchids.
บอกว่าคำหรือวลีที่อยู่ระหว่าง comma เป็น appositive หรือส่วนที่ให้ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับคำนามที่อยู่หน้า comma
Merury, the silver-colored metal used in themometers, is usually in a liquid form.
2. เครื่องหมาย colon (:)
ขยายความเพิ่มเติม เช่น
We are not allowed to keep wild animals as pets: it’s against their nature.
We are not going abroad on vacation this year: we have to save up for a new house.
3. เครื่องหมาย dash (-)
แสดงรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมหรือยกตัวอย่าง เช่น
She likes to wear the queen of clothing- Thai silk.
ทำหน้าที่เหมือนเครื่องหมาย comma เช่น
A paramecium- a microscopic organism- lives in fresh water.
4. เครื่องหมาย quotation marks (“_”)
แสดงคำหรือวลีที่รู้จักกันดี เช่น His favorite drink is “Coke”.
แสดงคำหรือวลีที่มีความหมายแตกต่างไปจากความหมายเดิมของคำนั้น เช่น
She is such a “good” girl: she tells on her friends.
5. เครื่องหมาย parenthesis(……)
แสดงความหมายเพิ่มเติม ใช้คล้ายกับเครื่องหมาย dash (_) และเครื่องหมาย comma (,) เช่น During the earliest period of prenatal (before birth) development, survival is the most important issue.
เ6. ครื่องหมาย asterisk(*) แสดงข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม เช่น
Human being the world over have very different ideas about what is pleasant and unpleasant, polite and rude, true and false, right and wrong. This capacity for startling difference is a wonder of our species: the expansion of human culture.*
*Culture: the beliefs, values, behavior, and material objects shared by a particular people.
